The Pharma/MedTech division of Taylors Architects received its first commission in the Medical Device sector in 1970. The design team was appointed on an individual basis mandated by the scope of the project in hand. On the back of providing an Architectural service, the division grew within Taylors providing a professional design and management service manifesting itself as Taylor Group (Design and Project Management) serving blue chip multi-national clients nationally in a single point design team structure (SPDT).

Overview

Taylors first commission in the Healthcare/MedTech industry commenced with Baxter Healthcare Castlebar and Swinford sites in 1970, a service that continues today spanning in excess of 50+ years.

The service provided and the frequency and scale of the projects undertaken required the allocation of dedicated personnel within Taylors to adequately service the needs of the client. From the onset Taylors were awarded responsibility of managing the design team and the knowledge and experience gained in the delivery of multiple production critical projects aided the streamlining the service we provided and assisted the project stakeholders and site engineering teams in the development and presentation of long range planning strategies (LRP’s) to maximize future site development opportunities.

Master Planning

Master Planning exercises were conducted at regular intervals and usually informed the Long-Range Planning (LRP) reporting strategy which was essential for the progressive development of the campus. Master Planning exercises therefore comprised the development of the overall site campus and to a greater extent the internal Master Planning of facilities and utilities.

Statutory Compliance

All projects were successfully navigated through the planning, fire/DAC certificate application processes and in more recent times BCAR compliance. The continuous internal development of facilities was challenging from a building control perspective and earlier phases of development relied on the NFPA standards to which they were designed for building control compliance.

Project Design

The starting point on all projects referenced the site/building master plan where the process followed by equipment requirements mandated the location and footprint of a project. Connectivity and adjacencies were also critical design parameters for the development of streamlined process flows, from raw materials in to finished good out. Utilities availability or the provision of additional utility capacities were considered on the basis of potential future provision and as all stakeholders were aligned on this strategy, the process was efficient and cost effective.

Project Execution

All projects were designed, procured and executed in the traditional RIAI from of contract. Robust design and tender documentation relied on very specific site/facility knowledge and as such change and cost management was efficient and effective.
